Though I missed watching it on TV, I visited their website to read about it. One of India’s biggest green events, the Greenathon, was an NDTV (one of India’s leading television channels) effort to “help raise funds for Teri’s ‘Lighting a Billion Lives’ initiative to provide solar lanterns to villages that would otherwise be without electricity for a decade or more”. It was a 24 hour live event which started on Feb 7, 2009 and went onto Feb 8, and was telecast all NDTV channels “to raise awareness about the environment and find ways to create a cleaner, greener tomorrow.” It featured Indian’s leading actors, business men, activists, designers, NGOs, teachers and school children.

“The Greenathon has raised over 2 crore for TERI’s Lighting a Billion Lives campaign that aims at solar powering villages across the country. We thank you for your overwhelming support. The journey is not over yet..we will continue to strive for a better, cleaner environment. Donate for the cause and help bring the change.”

The “Donations so far” on their website read a whopping Rs. 2,40,01,234 on Feb 9, 2009, in the evening (5:18 PM IST)

NDTV-Toyota in partnership with Swechha held the first ever Greenathon, a 24 hour clean-up drive for the Yamuna, where thousands of people engaged in a relay clean-up of the river banks.”

Some celebrities ran many kilometers (Milind Soman, an actor and model ran 60 kms), some performed dance numbers, some sang, some planted trees, some “adopted” villages, some cleaned the streets, and much more. It was very heartening to read the following passage on their “Donate” page.

“Lighting a Billion Lives- A teri intiative

Over 1.6 billion people in the world lack access to electricity; roughly 25 per cent are in India alone. For these people, life comes to a standstill after dusk. Inadequate lighting is not only an impediment to progress and development opportunities, but also has a direct impact on the health, environment, and safety of millions of people, as they are forced to light their homes with kerosene lamps, dung cakes, firewood, and crop residue after sunset. Recognizing the need to change the existing scenario, TERI, with its vision to work for global sustainable development and its commitment towards creating innovative solutions for a better tomorrow, has undertaken an initiative of ‘Lighting a Billion Lives’ (LABL) through the use of solar lighting devices. The Campaign aims to bring light into the lives of one billion rural people by replacing the kerosene and paraffin lanterns with solar lighting devices. This will facilitate education of children; provide better illumination and kerosene-smoke-free indoor environment for women to do household chores; and provide opportunities for livelihoods both at the individual level and at village level.”  [Donate]

Tomato and Bread Crumbs Snack 

Serves 2

Ingredients:

Tomatoes- 2/3

Bread crumbs- One big bowl

Butter- 3tbsp

Salt- to taste

Red chilli/pepper powder- to taste

Cheese- to garnish

Method:

Finely chop the tomatoes and cook them in a skillet on medium heat till they turn semi-liquid. Add butter, salt, red chilli/pepper powder and mix it thoroughly. Then add the bread crumbs and mix. The consistency should be that of dough. Put the lid on the skillet and let it cook on low heat until the bread crumbs become soft. Once done, take out in a bowl and garnish with grated cheese. Serve hot.

3. Go to “Download Properties”.

4. Check the box “Login required”

5. Enter the username and password in the spaces below it and click ok.

6. Then when you come back to the Free Download Manager window again, click on the download name.

7. Then click on the green circle with an arrow in between (it resembles a “play” button).

8. The download starts !!
